EMDR Therapy in Melbourne, FL

Painful memories don't always stay in the past. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a well-researched therapy that helps your brain process distressing experiences so they lose their grip on your present. At Vista Counseling & Wellness, three of our therapists offer EMDR at our two Melbourne offices and by telehealth for Florida residents.

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR is a structured therapy that uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or tapping, while you briefly focus on a difficult memory. Over time the memory becomes less vivid and less upsetting, and the negative beliefs attached to it, like "I'm not safe" or "It was my fault," can shift into healthier ones. You don't have to describe every detail of what happened for EMDR to work.

What can EMDR help with?

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Grief and loss

  • Accidents, medical trauma and first responder stress

  • Childhood experiences that still affect you today

  • Substance use recovery when trauma is part of the picture

What to expect in an EMDR session

Sessions are 50 minutes. We start by getting to know you, building coping skills and making sure you feel grounded before any memory work begins. From there we work through target memories at a pace that feels manageable. Many clients notice changes within a few sessions, but every person's timeline is different.

EMDR therapy FAQs

Is EMDR effective?

EMDR is recommended for PTSD by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and it is supported by decades of research.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

No. EMDR doesn't require you to describe every detail out loud, which is one reason many people find it easier than traditional talk therapy.

How many EMDR sessions will I need?

It depends on what you're working on. A single recent event may take a handful of sessions, while complex or long-term trauma usually takes longer. We'll talk about a plan during your first visit.

Can EMDR be done online?

Yes. Virtual EMDR uses on-screen eye movements or self-tapping, and research shows it can be as effective as in-person sessions. We offer it to anyone located in Florida.
